제28분-Attachment to Rewards of Merit

Subhuti,if one Bodhisattva bestows in charity sufficient of the seven treasures to

fill as many worlds as there be sand-grains in the river Ganges,and another,realizing that all things are egoless,attains perfection through patient forbearance,the merit of the latter will far exceed that of the former. Why is this,Subhuti? It is because all Bodhisattvas are insentient as to the rewards of merit.

Then Subhuti said to Buddha: What is this saying, World-honoured one, that Bodhisattvas are insentient as to rewards of merit?

〔And Buddha answered〕: Subhuti,Bodhisattvas who achieve merit should not be fettered with desire for rewards. Thus it is said that rewards of merit are not received.

 

"수보리여!만약 어느 보상리 갠지스 강 모래 수만큼의 세게에 가득찬 칠보로써 보시하고, 또 한 보살이 있어 일체의 법이 무아라는 것을 알아 인내를 얻어 도를 성취했다면 이 보살의 공덕은 앞의 보살이 얻은 공덕보다 클 것이다. 왜냐하면 수보리여! 모든 보살은 공덕에 연연하지 않기 때문이니라."
그러자 수보리가 부처님께 아뢰었다.
"세존이시여! 왜 보살이 공덕에 연연하지 않는다니 그 뜻이 무엇입니까?"
"이 뜻은 공덕이라는 것은 받을 수 있는 것이 아니라는 것이다.

 

[공덕을 바라는 집착]

진정한 공덕이란 받을 수 있는 것이 아닙니다. 왜냐면 바로 지금 경험 하는 것이기 때문입니다. 누군가 우리에게 천번을 감사하다고 했거나,감사하다고 하지 않았거나 우리는 받은 것이 아무것도 없습니다. 본래 공덕이라는 것도 없기 때문입니다. 받는 복덕에 집착하지 않고  지금 이순간 있는 그대로 경험하면 그것이 가장 높은 복덕인 것입니다. 지금 이순간 말고  우리의 존재를 어디서 느낄 수 있겠습니까?
